The Kosher Cut’s™ shechita course* starts with a multi day hands on intensive where you will learn the fundamentals of knife sharpening and shechita. After the intensive we will hold twenty ~75 minute online classes, via google hangouts, where we’ll thoroughly go over the relevant portions of the shulchan aruch. After completing the text study we will hold a second multi day hands on intensive. During this intensive you will further perfect your knife skills, practice kashering of birds, and take all your final tests for the course. Those that pass the tests and meet the necessary religious criteria will be eligible to receive hoda’a (recommendation for certification) and be referred to a Rabbi who will provide an additional test for Kabbalah (certification). If you don’t pass your tests you will be given a chance to retest at the earliest possible time. Alternatively, online or in person training is also available on an hourly basis.

Course Timing and Logistics

The Kosher Cut’s group shechita courses begin when a sufficient amount of students have signed up and will be scheduled to meet at a time which will work for all participating students. Courses usually start in the spring or early summer and last 3-6 months, depending on frequency of the text study sessions. Hands on intensives are held over 2-4 days in a location that provides maximum ease for teachers. Students may sign up for only the text study course or hands on intensives, but must have an equivalent amount of experience elsewhere and be able to pass all tests to be eligible for Kabbalah. Additionally, if you’re interested in setting up a course in you community we will work with you to help recruit classmates and to set up a location for the hands on intensives near your location.
